| An Internet search engine is a software programme specially-designed to search for information on the Internet. The search results are commonly called hits and are presented in the form of a list. The data may comprise web pages, images, data and other types of files. Some search engines also collect information available in databases or open directories. If compared to Internet directories which are maintained by human editors, search tools operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input. Internet search engines function by storing information about countless web pages which they retrieve from the WWW. These pages are retrieved by a web crawler, also known as a spider. It is an automated Web browser that follows every link it discovers. The content of each page is then analyzed to decide how it should be indexed. Words, for example, are taken from titles, headings or special fields called meta tags. Data about web pages are stored in an index catalogue for further use in queries. Some search tools, such as Google, store the whole or part of the source page (differently called a cache) and information about web pages, while others, such as AltaVista, save and store every word of every page they have discovered. This cached page always holds the initial search text, since it is the one that was actually indexed. Therefore, it can be very useful when the content of the current page has been altered and the search words are no longer in it. When an Internet user types search words in the search field, the engine checks its database and displays a list of best-matching web pages according to its parameters, usually with a brief summary combined with the document's title and at times excerpts from the text. Some search tools have installed an advanced option called proximity search which allows users to determine the length between key words. The relevancy of the result set determines the usefulness of a search engine. Since there can be millions of web pages that contain a certain word or word combination, some pages may appear to be more relevant and popular than others. Most search tools apply methods to grade the results to display the "best" results first. The way a search engine displays web pages varies from one engine to another. The methods also alter with time, as the use of the Internet alters and new techniques are employed. |
